Behind the Screens: How Better Data is Saving Lives

When it comes to ending homelessness, the numbers don’t lie—but only if they’re accurate. Behind every figure in the Big Bend Continuum of Care’s (BBCoC) reports lies a rigorous Data Quality process that keeps our Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) clean and reliable. Each month, our Data Committee runs multi-step audits—flagging missing intake dates, mismatched ZIP codes, or unclear exit destinations—and works directly with providers to correct those records.

Our public dashboards then turn that accuracy into transparency, giving partner agencies and the community at large a clear view of trends and service gaps.

“Accurate data is the cornerstone of an effective homelessness response,” says Broderick Seabrooks, BBCoC’s HMIS Data Analyst. “When our partners submit clean data, we can allocate resources where they’ll do the most good—and everyone can see the impact.”

By committing to regular, hands-on quality checks, BBCoC ensures that every decision—from funding allocations to program improvements—is driven by reliable information. In a field where lives depend on timely, targeted support, clean data isn’t just a back-office task—it’s a lifesaving priority.
